La Actividad Física en los tiempos del Covid-19

Hacer actividad física probablemente no sea una prioridad en medio de nuestra preocupación por protegernos a nosotros mismos, a nuestras familias y a nuestras comunidades durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Pero cuidado, quizás debería serlo, porque la actividad física puede ser una herramienta valiosa para controlar las infecciones por COVID-19 y mantener la calidad de vida.

La actividad física es una de las fuerzas más poderosas para mantener la buena salud. Al mejorar el funcionamiento de numerosos sistemas fisiológicos, la actividad física ayuda a prevenir y/o tratar muchas condiciones de salud física y mental.

Realizar actividad física tiene el potencial de reducir la gravedad de las infecciones por COVID-19. Esto está relacionado con lo que sucede en los pulmones durante una infección. El sistema inmunitario detecta el virus invasor en los pulmones y lo ataca. El conflicto entre el virus y las células inmunes crea inflamación. Esa inflamación causa daño al tejido pulmonar que interfiere con la respiración y puede volverse lo suficientemente grave como para requerir intervenciones médicas, como ventiladores mecánicos.

¿Cómo es esto relevante para la actividad física? Cuando se está activo, los músculos producen compuestos que mejoran el funcionamiento del sistema inmunitario y reducen la inflamación. Por lo tanto, la actividad física fortalece los dos procesos biológicos que reaccionan a la infección. Aunque no se han realizado estudios de los efectos del ejercicio con pacientes con COVID-19, los efectos de la actividad física sobre la inmunidad, la inflamación y las infecciones respiratorias virales están bien documentadas. Debido a que los músculos representan el 30-40% del peso corporal, pueden ser un poderoso aliado para combatir el impacto de la infección, pero solo cuando se usan los músculos. La actividad física de intensidad moderada, como caminar, tiene el mejor impacto, pero el ejercicio vigoroso extremo, como correr un maratón, reduce temporalmente la función inmune. El potencial de una mayor actividad física para reducir la cantidad de personas infectadas que requieren hospitalización y el uso de ventiladores podría ayudar a reducir el grado en que los sistemas de atención médica se ven abrumados por los casos de infección grave.

La actividad física es efectiva tanto para prevenir como para tratar enfermedades cardíacas, diabetes y ocho tipos específicos de cáncer, los cuales aumentan el riesgo de enfermedades graves y muerte entre las personas infectadas con el coronavirus. Aunque la actividad física es ampliamente recomendada por las autoridades de salud, los esfuerzos para promover estilos de vida activos son mínimos. Ahora tiene sentido alentar a las personas, especialmente aquellas con enfermedades crónicas, a que sean moderadamente activas antes de enfermarse, para reducir la gravedad de la enfermedad después de la infección. Debido a que la actividad física tiene efectos inmediatos sobre el funcionamiento inmune y la inflamación, similar a tomar un medicamento diariamente, las personas pueden reducir su riesgo de infecciones virales graves y el riesgo de múltiples enfermedades crónicas simplemente intentando cumplir la recomendación de actividad física de 150 minutos a la semana de actividad física moderada aeróbica (podría cumplirse con 30 minutos diarios de actividad física en la casa o dando un paseo corto). No es demasiado tarde en la pandemia para que las personas se beneficien de aumentos moderados en su actividad física

Por otra parte, los síntomas de estrés aumentarán a medida que continúe la pandemia, debido a las amenazas para la salud, la pérdida de empleo, la reducción de ingresos y el aislamiento social. Afortunadamente, estar físicamente activo tiene importantes beneficios para la salud mental, y alentar a las personas a estar activas podría ayudar a muchos a sobrellevar el estrés continuo y evitar enfermedades psicológicas. Cada sesión de actividad física reduce los síntomas de depresión y ansiedad, por lo que estar activo todos los días puede ser un antídoto parcial para el estrés de la pandemia. Para las personas que ya sienten angustia, estar activo es tan efectivo como los medicamentos y la psicoterapia. La actividad física más común es caminar, que es gratuita, accesible para la mayoría de las personas de todas las edades y se presta bien para mantener el distanciamiento social.
Se necesita acción para aumentar la actividad física durante la pandemia del coronavirus. Las acciones más importantes ahora son reducir la propagación del coronavirus a través del distanciamiento social, lavarse las manos con frecuencia y evitar tocarse la cara. La actividad física ya es casi universalmente recomendada, y hay mucha evidencia de que la actividad física podría contribuir tanto a reducir la gravedad de la enfermedad COVID-19 como a mejorar la calidad de vida antes y después de la infección.

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement?
